(From: 'Krachttraining', article in 'De voetbaltrainer' No. 132, 2005)
Within sc Heerenveen we set high demands on the physical conditions of our players. Strength training is therefore an integral part of our training content. Providing maximum power determines physical performance such as jumping, etc. To increase your peak power requires specific training, such as jumping or sprinting with resistance. For several months we use the Vertimax platform at which you connect rubber bands to the hip, knee and hand by use of a belt. Through an ingenious system the resistance remains almost constant during both quiet (squat) as well as fast (jump) movements. Not only you continuously have to overcome the resistance in any position, also you're in the air more quickly pulled to the ground. This gives you more stress and more control. By moving the elastic can you can choose a variable resistor (approximately 8 to 75 kg) for a variety of exercises. This device has many applications for rehabilitation and top sports.
The experience with the device at sc Heerenveen learns that it is a right supplement within our rehabilitation and physical training. Within our complex power training we use this device for instance to make squat jumps and many other jumps (to improve coordination, jumping ability and speed, both two-legged and one-legged). The specific thing of jumping with this device compared with jumping with a neck dumbbell is - besides almost constant resistance - your unrestricted freedom of movement and use of your arms, making it a more natural movement. You can train more specific, such a header or knee lift with resistance, and so on. Jumps with resistance are followed by a number of jumps without resistance, during which the players jump higher than they normally could (other impulses of the central nervous system). This effect gives the players the feeling they can 'fly' and that's a plus for the motivation of players and a learning experience for the central nervous system.

TRAINING EXPLOSIVENESS AT ARKE POLLUX
In the women's team Arke Pollux we have engaged for years in strength training. Part of the strength training is aimed at preventing injuries (shoulder, back, knees), some on improving the specific volleyball performance.
To improve the volleyball performance, the explosive force has to be trained in a specific 'sport setting'. This means that the body chain as a whole has to be trained and not in parts (what often happens in strength training with equipment). The freedom of movement provides opportunities to perform the exercises in a sport specific movement.

The Vertimax system meets all the conditions of explosiveness training in volleyball: with a slight resistance a functional volleyball movement can be executed as explosive as possible. This may for instance be a leap but a reflection of skipping motion as well.
It also raises a number of advantages compared to training with dumbbells, elastics and depth jumps:
• During a jump, there is a constant resistance by which the muscles are
optimally strained. For a jump with a barbell or elastic this is not possible.
• There is a lower burden of shoulders and back.
My experience is that it is a pleasant way of explosiveness training. You can exercise very focused sport specific training, it takes little time and there is little chance for injuries. After the training the gain is directly measurable and the volleyball player can experience it immediately, which is very motivating. In addition to the sport specific aspect you can use this device also ideally as an aid to rehabilitation of sports injuries involving the combination of explosiveness and stability can be optimally trained.
Testimonials
The Vertimax is in the United States a big top hit in explosive sports like American football, athletics, basketball, baseball, hockey, speed skating, gymnastics, soccer and volleyball.
Reactions of athletes and coaches.
In Europe, the Vertimax is increasingly applied as part of strength training. For example in football, skating and volleyball.

Baseball
"After VertiMax training, players just seem to play with more intensity. Whatever it takes to make the play, you can see more of it! It's a great device to increase leg strength, core strength, and overall foot speed. During the game I could see the difference and my players loved training on VertiMax!"
Basketball
"The VertiMax is the best jump training system in the world. Nothing on the market has done more to develop my basketball players' vertical jump and quickness on the court. The VertiMax is a must-have that will make each of your players and team a more dominant force on the court ."
American Football
"VertiMax is the best training system incorporating upper body loading into an already highly effective explosion training device. Incorporating the upper body to improve the lift aspect of vertical jump training is a giant breakthrough for all skill levels."
Speed skating
"The VertiMax provides the competitive edge I need because it is the best training system I've found to increase my explosive leg power! VertiMax has improved my acceleration, allowing me to reach my top speed quicker and maintain it longer."
Hockey
"The VertiMax is the ultimate dryland functional training system for hockey players who want to increase their explosive power and gain a competitive edge with respect to mobility and stamina on the ice."
